Hybridizing of Gladiolus

Hybridizing of Gladiolus is a challenging and exciting way to expand your hobby of Gladiolus growing. The hybridizing of Gladiolus in its simplest explanation is removing pollen from the male part of a flower from a variety of one plant (this plant is the pollen parent). Then placing the pollen on the female part of another gladiolus flower from another plant (the seed parent).

There is regular section in the North American Gladiolus Council (NAGC) publication, Gladworld on the subject of hybridizing. Information is directed at both the beginner and experienced hybridizer. We highly recommend membership In NAGC, including a subscription to Gladworld, to enhance your knowledge of this aspect of Gladiolus growing.

Below are some graphic examples of the variations in floral characteristics in the offspring achieved by hybridizing.
